June 12th NHS Confederation Annual Conference – Special Session in Second Life - attendance free to SL residents
Note 1: This event will be broadcast in Second Life and requires residents to be familiar with attending video events in Second Life (you will require the latest version of Quicktime, Second Life client, a suitable headphone or speaker and please keep your microphones muted during the event).
Note 2: conference takes place in UK with local time = BST=GMT+1 which means conference starts 1.30am SL time
Imperial College London and the NHS Confederation would like to invite you to take part in an exclusive event that on previous occasions has been closed to members of the public – an opportunity to learn about and debate the most effective ways to achieve good local leadership in the National Health Service, and will provide a unique overview of the health service as a whole.
The Local Leadership: A National Service Conference has been organised by the NHS Confederation and will be broadcast to you live in SL directly from ACC in Liverpool on Friday the 12th of June starting at 9:30 BST (UK Time = 1.30am SLT). Please arrive at 09.00 BST for a video and sound check.
Your questions will be posed to the speakers and panels at the RL conference in Liverpool.

Can president Obama fix the US Health System?
The optimism that greeted President Obama’s victory will meet its greatest challenge in trying to fix the broken USA health system. Simon Stevens – Tony Blairs advisor now works in the USA and is involved with this effort. Come and hear his perspective on whether this is a change we can believe in.

11.30 – 12.15 BST Panel Discussion - Just how tough is it going to get?
What are the main risks and challenges that local leaders will have to contend with over the next 2-3 years?
How can they prepare for these and ensure that their organisations are resilient in the face of an increasingly challenging environment. Are different responses required by commissioners and providers? What impact will a change in government have?
This session asks a panel to look forward and debate the issues that local leaders will need to address with the audience.

Barry Schwartz, Professor of Social theory and social action, Swathmore College, Pensylvania, USA
Believing that the ‘choice problem’ is relevant in every corner of modern society, his book The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less says that too many choices can paralyze people into inaction and cause them to be dissatisfied with even good decisions. He has written 10 books and more than 100 articles for professional journals. He has lectured to audiences as large as 5000, among them the British and Dutch governments and business audiences representing industries as diverse as healthcare, supermarkets, e-commerce and the military.
